Kurt Fletcher never expected Sgt. Thomson to go down first, but it happened. A well aimed bullet to the head saw to that. Knowing that he was now in charge, Kurt turned around and saw that everyone was on the ground. From the transport, Kurt yelled for everyone to take cover from the enemy gun fire. Enemy fire erupted from the walls surrounding the base’s turrets, bunkers and snipers. Kurt had twenty men under his command and as he saw other squads around him doing their specific tasks, it reminded him that it was his job to take out the gate of the base.
Kurt: “Buck, Jacobs, use your machine gun and give us some covering fire. I want all snipers to pick off men around the gate and water towers. Stevens, pick 5 men and stay here to set up some barricades and a mortar and some communications. The rest of you stay with me.”
Kurt took the radio from his radioman, Robinson, and began to speak again.
Kurt: “Delta-8096, this is Delta-8096 calling in Foxtrot 5-9.”
Foxtrot: “This is Foxtrot 5-9, over.”
Kurt: “We need a smoke screen about 500 yards in front of our forward position, and keep firing round for about twenty seconds. Can you do that?”
Foxtrot 5-9: “Affirmative.”
Kurt: “Execute in thirty seconds, over.”
Fire from the two bunkers was all over the plain in front of the base. Kurt’s squad still wasn’t officially in combat till they walked about two more yards, though they were still in range of enemy snipers. Kurt handed his radioman the radio, but then he heard a piercing sound, and Robinson was on the ground.
Kurt: “Medic! James, get over here!”
James (Australian Medic): “No, use here mate…the bloke’s dead.”
Kurt: “See if you can help him at all! The rest of you, twenty-five seconds and we charge the gate. Make sure you have your gas masks on and thermal because there will be tear gas and smoke. Put the C-4 on the gate, and yell at us when you have it on. Then run clear of the blast radius. We will then detonate the charge.”
The burly demolitions expert was handpicked by Kurt because he had a knack for knowing the exact amount of placement of charges on structures. Kurt pulled out his goggles and switched to thermal as he watched an explosion from an AU tactical plane take out a bunker. His squad entered the combat zone and he felt the heat of battle. Immediately, one of his men fell from a sniper in a watchtower. Kurt pulled out his AUC-XC and pelted the tower with bullets, though they had little effect. He switched to his double-barreled grenade launcher and fired both barrels at the same time into the watchtower. The sniper had no chance of survival.
Kurt watched as the gas and smoke barrage layered the enemy bunkers with plumes of white smoke. The turret gunner that was most problematic for Kurt’s squad reached for a gas mask, but he was too late. Tear gas filled the bunker, and he could no longer see. Kurt team gave cover to cover to Houston, the demolitionist, as he ran up to the gate. Pulling out his explosives, Houston made a double layered “H” on the gate, his trademark pattern for demolitions. Following Kurt orders, he fused the chares and ran, giving Delta squad the signal to run for their lives out of the protective smoke. As Kurt ran out, his sniper got pelted with a turret fun and was killed in a flash. Over his com-link, he heard Houston’s distinctive Russian accent say, “Fire in the hole!”
He dived with five other Delta men and saw the gate explode. As the battle was planned, AU troops waiting behind the lines charged through the gap in the gate made by the explosives. Kurt’s squad sprinted back to his barricade that the snipers and heavy machine gunners had set up; however, he returned with 6 fewer men. The group congratulated each other, but they knew they still had a job to do.
Their objective was complete, but the battle still raged onward.
